Primary Activity

February 28th was one of our Primary Activities for the year. The turn out was great! It was based around the Prophet Noah and the commandment he was given by God to build an Ark. The idea of the activity was to enforce the story of Noah and the notion that obeying Gods words will not only protect us but allow our testimony and spiritual understanding to grow. With General Conference coming up in April we challenged the kids to listen and heed to the Prophet's words as he is speaking on behalf of God, as Noah did.

(The Sunday before the activity Noah made an appearance in Primary counseling that a flood was coming and that God commanded him to build an Ark, and asked all the kids to attend that Saturday and help)
(minor detail...his deep voice and large stature made some of the Sunbeam children's face cringe in terror and on the verge of crying)

The activity started off with Noah (my wonderful and always willing husband, Don) coming in and exclaiming to the children that they needed to build an ark. He explained the dimensions as described in the Bible, as well as other little tid-bits and facts. The children made paper boats out of card-stock and filled them with animal crackers.




The next activity the kids all gathered around Noah as he talked about all the animals they had to gather. He had a stack of animal pictures (2 of each animal) and went through and mimicked the sounds they might make. We then divided the children up evenly and gave an animal card to each. The game was for each kid to make the sound of their animal and try to find the other kid making the same sound. Then they were to go, two by two, to the tables and draw an animal on a brown lunch sack. After this activity they then were split into three groups and sent on a little scavenger hunt with their sacks to gather food. They found a Sandwich, Drink, Chips, and a Snack. The kids all ended up in the Primary room.






Noah then explained what happened next, how the wicked people mocked and then how the rain started pouring down. The kids were then lead back into the cultural hall where thunder and rain sounds were booming from some speakers and the ark standing between the divider curtains. All the kids entered the Ark, and there ate lunch while Noah talked about how long the rains fell as well as fun questions, like what the ark must have smelled like with all those animals.


After the kids were done eating and the rain/thunder sounds were turned off Noah sent out a dove (kid) to look for land. Nothing. He sent out another and he brought back a twig. (church floral arrangement). Another was sent and never returned. All the children came out of the Ark and beheld a giant rainbow. We talked briefly about the significance of the sign and then closed the activity. The kids had a wonderful time, and hopefully will remember not only the story of Noah but the great significance of the event.

Don did so well, he is such a trooper! So far he has been an Easter Bunny for one activity, Raphael the poet in another, and now Noah for this. We will see what is in store for the rest of the year.... :-D
